Green enthusiasts to knock on CM's doors to end tree felling

Massive rally planned in protest against the civic body's resolution seeking legal action against those who oppose cutting trees

A meeting of nature conservation groups and green enthusiasts on Sunday resolved to write to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa expressing their anguish over a resolution passed by the civic body seeking legal action against those who oppose tree cutting. The meeting also resolved to seek an appointment with the Chief Minister.

Representatives from Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore, Siruthuli, Osai, Oli, Environment Conservation Group, CODISSIA, Nature Conservation Group, Pasumpulari, Sai Baba Colony Residents' Association, Nilgiris Wildlife and Environment Association and a host of others took part in the meeting.

K. Kalidasan of Osai told The Hindu that the meeting termed a resolution of the civic body ‘very unfortunate' as it tries to brand nature enthusiasts as a group opposed to development works.

The civic body had recently passed a resolution seeking legal action against those fighting for the survival of the remaining green patches.

He added that nature enthusiasts are not against development works and such an image was being created so as to turn the public ire against them. “We want the administration and the civic body to only explore ways and means to spare trees while carrying out development works”, Mr. Kalidasan said.

Letter

It was decided at the meeting to first write to the Chief Minister to draw her attention towards the need for saving trees especially when her Government has embarked on a massive afforestation programme.

The letter would also explain in detail the protests carried out in the recent times and the tone and tenor of the civic body's resolution, which was almost an attempt to indulge in arm twisting and intimidation, Mr. Kalidasan said. The letter would also seek an appointment with the Chief Minister to explain the recent incidents of tree cutting and the background behind the civic body's resolution.

All associations have decided to join hands and take out a rally in protest against the resolution.

To prevent incidents of nature enthusiasts being intimidated and recent incidents of arm twisting, it was also decided to explore ways for getting a legal insulation. The resolutions passed at the meeting on Sunday will translate into action within the next 10 days, he added.

Lawyer M. Venilla, who represented the NGOs before the Principal District Munsiff Court for obtaining a stay against tree cutting on Marudhamalai Road, has asked the citizens of Coimbatore to turn up on Monday and implead themselves in the case so as to strengthen the cause.

C.R. Jayaprakash, Executive Committee Member of Nilgiris Wildlife and Environment Association, said that these attempts should be opposed tooth and nail and should not be seen as an attempt to dilute the role and responsibilities of the Tree Protection Committee.

He added that the Tree Protection Committee should seek legal recourse to prevent loss of greenery.

Community based eco-tourism, a success story 

Parambikulam Tiger Reserve has been able to make rapid strides in initiatives relating to eco-tourism as well improve forest management through community based eco-tourism, said K. Vijayanandan, Deputy Director and Wildlife Warden of Parambikulam Tiger Reserve (PTR).

He was speaking on the topic “Tribal Development through community based eco-tourism - Parambikulam Experience” at the Enviro Meet organised by Osai – Voice for Nature, an NGO.

Mr. Vijayanandan said that Parambikulam Tiger Reserve has many firsts to its credit, made possible through the participation of tribal people. Being a most protected forest area, the reserve has nearly five endemic flora varieties, he said.

Ever since the Joint Forest and Participatory Management was introduced, the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve has not witnessed even a single incident of poaching since 2004 and since 2007 there had not been a single incident of forest fire.

Employment opportunity for 234 tribal people, benefitting over 260 families, has resulted in the reserve becoming the first domestic cattle-free protected forest area.

Tribal people have become part of the Social Tiger Protection Force and are effectively combating forest and wildlife-related offences. There are seven eco-development committees serving the restricted and regulated eco-tourism needs and looking after the livelihood of tribal people. There are 13 eco-tourism packages being made available to tourists by the Department through tribal people.

Plastic waste has reduced tremendously and remaining waste are recycled and made into key chains embedded with PTR related images and slogans. They are sold as souvenir for the tourists. The tourism is regulated carefully avoiding disturbance to wildlife by banning the entry of private vehicles. Four new vehicles with 18 seats each have been inducted for taking the tourists around the reserve.

Referring to the farming activity in Poopara hamlet by the tribal people, Mr.Vijayanandan said that banana cultivation earlier led to human – animal conflict. Now, with inputs from Forest Department, the tribal people have switched over to ginger, coffee, pepper and turmeric cultivation, which are not sought after by wild animals. Organic certification and good price has turned them a happy lot today, he added.

Revenue

Mr. Vijayanandan said that the PTR recorded revenue of Rs. 1.25 crore during 2009-10 and it became Rs. 1.86 crore in 2010-2011 and in 2011-2012 it had risen to Rs. 2.45 crore. Of the revenue generated during the last year, Rs. 85 lakh was disbursed as salary to tribal people employed by the Forest Department, while Rs. 90 lakh was spent towards maintenance and upkeep.

He said that with eco-tourism initiatives aided by tribal people, the tiger reserve has become almost self-sufficient. During the previous fiscal, a total of 47,500 tourists had visited the tiger reserve, he said.

Referring to the ongoing problem of tree cutting in Coimbatore, Mr. Vijayanandan said that the 245-year-old Connemara teak, the oldest in the entire country, has so far benefitted the earth to a tune of Rs. 8 crore in terms of oxygen generation. He said that trees need to be looked at for the ecological value and the benefits it gives to humanity.

On involving the generations of tomorrow towards the task of conservation and inculcating the ability to appreciate nature, Mr. Vijayanandan said that during 2011-2012, as many as 60 nature camps benefitting 2,250 students were held providing free food and accommodation. C.R. Jayaprakash, Assistant Professor of PSG College of Arts and Science, presided over the function and K. Kalidasan, president of Osai, took part.

Advocate-Commissioner inspects Marudhamalai Road in Coimbatore

He has been asked to find out if the trees need to be cut

C. Kannan, Principal District Munsiff Court-appointed Commissioner, on Friday inspected the stretch along Marudhamalai Road to assess the number of trees cut and find out if all those had to be necessarily felled to widen the road.

He was accompanied by members of various environment groups, who had on Thursday, obtained an interim injunction from the court restraining the State Highways Department from cutting trees to widen the road.

The court, while granting the injunction till April 30, appointed advocate Mr. Kannan mandating him with inspecting the stretch where the trees had been cut, taking stock of the number of trees cut thus far and those marked to be cut.

The court also tasked him with assessing and recording the trees that could be spared. It also asked him to take the assistance of a photographer.

S. Mahesh Prasanna, a member of Osai, an environment organisation, said that the Advocate-Commissioner walked for a while and went on motorcycle inspecting the stretch from Lawley Road Junction to Karupparayan Koil on Marudhamalai Road.

Those who accompanied Mr. Kannan include Mr. Prasanna, Then Muruga Kani and M. Umesh of Osai, Jalaal of Nature Conservation Society, Salim of Environment Conservation Group, R. Karpagam of Oli, Vanitha Mohan of Siruthuli and Sujini of Race Course Neighbourhood Association (RANA) and Yoganathan of Matram besides members from Save Coimbatore Wetlands.

Ms. Karpagam along with T. Suresh, a Vadavalli resident, had filed the petition before the court stating that the Highways Department officials had cut more trees though they had permission for cutting only 210 trees.

The number of trees removed could be more than 210 trees.

They also said that the officials had marked more trees for cutting though those trees in no way hindered the road expansion work.

The petitioners had also sought replanting the felled trees stating that eight out of 10 such trees had survived in a few countries and cited the instance of Singapore replanting trees that were felled in Indonesia. They wanted the officials to replant the felled trees even if they did not have plans of planting saplings to compensate the loss of tree cover on Marudhamalai Road.

Meanwhile, commotion prevailed on Chellapppa Gounder Street, Kattoor, where the contractor the Coimbatore Corporation had engaged to construct storm water drains made arrangements for cutting trees to proceed with the construction work.

The Corporation had to twice stall the work as nature enthusiasts raised objections stating that the permission to cut trees had been accorded without referring the same to the tree protection committee.

இது நிமிடங்கள் மட்டும் அல்ல ?

ஒவ்வொரு நிமிடமும் காதல் , அன்பு , உரிமை , பாசம் , நட்பு என ஆயிரம் உணர்வுகள் கலந்த கலவை நொடிப்பொழுதுகள் !

என் ஆசிரியை விரிவுரைத்து பாடம் மட்டும் அல்ல ?

நான் முன்னேற அவர்கள் செதுக்கிய வெற்றிப்படிகள் !

அகம் காத்து , புறம் காத்து - நான் மகிழ தூய்மைக் காத்து , பசுமை காத்து புன்னகையுடன் பூக்களாக மலர்ந்து நறுமணம் தந்த ஆயிரம் அலுவல் களப்பணியாளர்கள் தான் என் சுவாசக்காற்று !

வாத்து ஒன்றினை காப்பாற்ற சென்று நானும் என் இரு சக்கர வாகனமும் அடிபட்டோம் !!!

மாலை சுமார் 5.30P.M அளவில் மருதமலை முருகனையும் , அங்கு வாழும் பறவை இனங்களை பார்பதற்காக  எனது இரண்டு சக்கர  வாகனத்தில் சென்று கொண்டிருந்தேன் . நான் சென்ற வேகமோ 40km/hr மட்டுமே .

என் முன் 407 லாரி  ஒன்று வேகமாக சென்று கொண்டிருந்தது .

யாரும் எதிர் பாராத வகையில் ஒரு வாத்து ஒன்று குறுக்கே வர  திடீர் என நிறுத்தியது , பின் தொடர்ந்து வேகமாக வந்து கொண்டிருந்த  நானோ சற்றும் வேகம் குறையாமல் சென்று வாகனத்தின் பின் பகுதியில் முட்டி நின்றேன் ..என் தலை பகுதியில் பலத்த அடிபட்டது மேலும் எனது வாகனத்தின் முன் பகுதி  உருக்குலைந்தது .

வாத்து தான் காரணம் என  உணர்ந்த நான் , வாத்து வளர்பவர்களை கடுமையாக கண்டித்துவிட்டு வந்தேன் !!!

எப்படியோ என்னிடம் இருந்த 600 ரூவாயும் கரைந்து விட்டது உடைந்த வாகன உதிரி பாகங்களை  வாங்குவதற்கு !!!

வாத்து ,கோழி, நாய் , பூனை , பன்றி , ஆடு , மாடு  ஆகியவற்றை வளர்பவர்கள் அவற்றை பராமரிப்பதில் சிறு கவனமும் செலுத்துவது இல்லை , 

எது தினமும் நடப்பது தான் , இன்று எனக்கு , நாளை நம்மில் ஒருவருக்கு !!!

வெப்பத்தின் சூட்டை தனிக்க சில தனியார் தொண்டு நிறுவனங்களும் , சில அரசியல் கட்சிகளும் இலவச ( விலை இல்லாத ) நீர் , மோர் பந்தல்களை துவங்கி உள்ளனர் ... இது சந்தோசம் தர கூடிய செய்தி .. அனால் அவர்கள் தட் பெருமைகளுக்காக முக்கிய சாலைகளை அக்கரமித்து , பந்தல் அமைத்து , மைக் செட் ( ஒலி பெறுக்கி) ,மேஜை நாற்காலி , மின்சார வசதி , மின் விசிறி , வாகனங்களை நிறுத்தும் வசதி என சகல வசதிகளை ஏற்படுத்தி பொது மக்களுக்கு பெரும் இடையூறு செய்கின்றனர் . இது உண்மையான பொது நல சேவையா ??? இது இப்படி பலரை சிரமம் படுத்தி மேலும் சுகாதாரம் அற்ற இடம் , அசுத்தமான குடிநீர் ,பிளாஸ்டிக் குவளைகள் ...என சொல்லிகொண்டே போகலாம் ... சரி எல்லாவற்றையும் விட தாங்கள் இலவசமாக பருகும் நீர் அருந்திய பிளாஸ்டிக் குவளைகளை முறையாக கையாள ஒரு குப்பை தொட்டியும் அவர்கள் வைப்பது இல்லை , குப்பை தொட்டிகள் வைத்திருந்தால் அதனுள் யாரும் போடுவதில்லை ... நிகழ்ச்சி முடிந்த பிறகு சுத்தம் செய்ய யாரும் முன்வருவதில்லை. இது போன்று சமீபத்தில் நடந்த தை பூசம் திருநாளில் லட்ச கணக்கான மக்கள் பல்வேறு கிராமங்களில் இருந்து காவடிகளை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு கூட்டம் கூட்டமாக கோவை - பொள்ளாச்சி சாலைகளில் பழனி செல்வதை வழக்கமாக கொண்டிருகின்றனர். பக்தர்கள் நடந்து செல்லும் வழி முழுவதும் இலவச ( விலை இல்லாத ) நீர்மோர் ,சிறு உணவு ,என அனைத்தையும் பிளாஸ்டிக் ஆல் ஆனா பொருட்களில் விநியோகிகின்றனர் . பிளாஸ்டிக் கையாள்வதை பற்றி நாம் எங்கு வேண்டுமானாலும் பேசலாம் , ஆனால் இது போன்ற செயல்களை நெறிமுறை படுத்தாத வரை பிளாஸ்டிக் அரக்கனை கொல்ல முடியாது !!! நாளைய தூய்மையான பாரதம் நாம் கைகளில் தான் என்பதை எல்லோரும் உணர வேண்டும் !!!
